Interesting idea for going to Japan. I would have thought most people who decide something like that would actually plan because talking to some friends who are over there right now there are few options for the poorly connected or skilled. But if most of them pack their bag and jump on a plane and expect to land a good job in Tokyo, they do need to listen to something like this before going. I also think that one of the bigger problems about going to Japan would be the sheer foreigner exploiting foreigner factor over there. It's the same old story, foreigner A was exploited by employer A and decides to make his position better by engaging in exploitation (such as misinformation about how to "make it", keeping good jobs to himself, and the general "Ive been here longer so I know better even if you are better qualified" exploitation), so nothing new there.

Good points and entertaining. The sound quality is not so good but well worth the listen. I also watched your Suntory Whisky review - good stuff!

+1
There are many over here in Japan who fit that description. They like to create cliques of "WE KNOW JAPAN" to impress the newly arrived but behind the reality they are little more than blubbering masses of flesh with little in the way of an impressive persona or achievements, and do nothing more than spend their whole lives cultivating online personas on forums which are sponsored in part by English Schools like the Gaijinpot.and do not allow as full an expression of opinion as this forum does.

Is it really that difficult to get your foot in the door in Tokyo? I'm kinda interested in knowing more. Great podcast Joe.

Thank you friend.

Yes it can be difficult without knowing the right people, unless you are prepared to start a square zero. I am glad you like the podcast as I try to help the new people get started here in Tokyo. For many who didn't prepare it is very hard and for the others who thought they had prepared properly but didn't it is also very hard. Life in Tokyo can be very hard for these youngster these days but with enough money in your pocket - you can do anything in this town.

Peace
Tokyo Joe

Thanks Joe! Stay safe there in Tokyo !

How do most of the people who go to Tokyo survive? What do they do to survive? How much money would I need to be successful in Tokyo?

I hope you got the pm, but I will post it here too. Thanks for your thoughts and question there WE.

Most of the people I see struggle. You can see why very easily. They work for ALTs. A lot get suckered in by reading forums like gaijinpot that are funded by advertising by the schools that collapse, dont pay teachers, and treat teachers like dirt. Well, you know by now what I think. I think if you have to work as a teacher in Japan you will only be successful lining other peoples pockets.

To live in Tokyo and be successful I would just follow my pointers as you can hear in my videos. 1. Get a real profession thats neat and one that the Japanese need and like and respect. Do not get a profession where the Japanese can do it better than you because you will be competing with 120 million people. 2. Save at least 50k before you come to give you your first year here in Tokyo and get your business established up and running.
