Tokyo Tower vs. Tokyo Sky Tree - Which Is Better ? - 東京タワー 1958 333m vs.東京スカイツリー 2012 634m
The two freestanding towers of Tokyo's 23 special wards, Tokyo Tower built in 1958 at 333m tall, and Tokyo Sky Tree to be completed in 2012 at 634m tall, and already the tallest building or structure in Japan for a few months.
Which structure
is more iconic?
is more beautiful?
has more outstanding design for the period in which it was built?
has more utility?
is better?
I'm going with Tokyo Tower. It was built by a country that only came out of a feudal system of government in 1868 and by 1958 built a tower higher than the Eiffel Tower in Paris. It was also built less than 15 years after the country of Japan was reduced to its knees in WWII. The Sky Tree is magnificent but the Tower's orange glow will long last in the collective memories of those who know Japan now and knew Japan during the megaboom decades of the 60s-80s.
Which do you all prefer? Tokyo Sky Tree or Tokyo Tower?
Sky Tree will undoubtedly be the more impressive icon of Tokyo, but the Tokyo Tower from 1958 will continue to be more impressive. Why?
Proximity to Roppongi
Proximity to Tokyo Bay

The Subject of some Japanese movies
The fact that the Japanese built such a tall free standing structure as you say, only less than a century before they modernized
The fact that the Japanese built such a tall free standing structure in Japan at all, when there are so many earthquakes.
Considering however that when the fireworks happen there are going to be 10 to 15 million people lined up in the shadow of the Sky Tree on the Sumida River, Sky Tree is going to really have a lot of publicity every summer.
Overall I find the architecture of both the Tokyo Sky Tree and the Tokyo Tower to be equally impressive when you consider the era in which each where built.

Read ArchNYers essay on the Tokyo Tower. You can see why the Tokyo Tower is so light and so good.
Overall I think the Sky Tree in Tokyo (the new Tokyo Tower) will be one of the most impressive freestanding structures in the world - and certainly in East Asia.
I fear that the little Tokyo Tower will not receive much attention once the Tokyo Sky Tree is constructed, but I could be wrong.
The Sky Tree looks impressive however I can see why the Tokyo Tower has its fans. In 1958 it must have been a sight to see in Tokyo, which I can imagine wasn't that built up then (earthquakes, war etc).
I like the old Tokyo Tower. It has over 50 years of history that saw Tokyo go from devastation and tragedy to the modern success story of Asia. It has sentimental value with a lot of people, I guess.
Construction is proceeding well it seems.
